THE town will not be getting any new prison cells after Runcorn grabbed the final slot for three modernised custody suites in the county.

With Warrington and Halton fighting it out to become the third new location for the updated prison cells, a site in Runcorn was this week granted outline planning permission to improve the force's outdated system of detaining criminals, which is still failing to meet Home Office standards.

The Manor Park site will be added to two other locations in Blacon, near Chester, and one on an industrial estate in Middlewich.

Funded by the Private Finance Initiative, the updated facilities will provide accommodation where people suspected of committing a crime can be questioned.

Fingerprint and breathalyser tests can also be carried out.
