CHESTER College Warrington Campus has taken the first step on the path to becoming a university after being given the go-ahead to award its own degrees.
Graduating students at the former Padgate campus of Warrington Collegiate are currently presented with their degrees from the University of Manchester. But over the next two years the college will become a university college and be able to introduce its own degrees.
Glyn Turton, assistant principal, said: "The college has for many years provided university-level education in Cheshire and Warrington, now it can do so with a title that properly reflects its standing."
This autumn, the Government will be announcing criteria for the creation of universities and college bosses at Chester and Warrington are keen to be first in line to apply for university status.
Dr Turton added: "If the Government gives us the green light to apply to become a university we are confident of further success."
