has to quit

A LEGAL loophole has forced Poulton North councillor Mike Howard to resign from his position on Warrington Borough Council.

Labour member Clr Howard, who was first elected in May 1999, has stepped down from the council as his job as catering manager at Padgate High School has now become a council position. As council employees are not allowed to be councillors as well, he has been forced to stand down.

He said he will look back on his achievements with pride, especially in Longbarn, and would like to return to the council at some stage.

"I am disappointed that I have had to leave the council but the job has to take priority

"I do wish Warrington all the best in the future and I am sure it will go from strength to strength," he added.

His departure will come as another blow to the town's Labour group which has endured a turbulent year.

Nomination of candidates begin today, Thursday, and will run until 12 noon on August 21. If an election is required it will be held on Thursday, September 18.
