ALEX boss Dario Gradi felt resilience won the day as his side saw off Wrexham to progress into the potential money spinning Second Round of the Carling Cup.

He was also pleased to see Dean Ashton back in the side after the striker's absence told in the opening day 3-1 defeat against Wimbledon.

"It was a decent performance," he expressed.

"While we've played better than that, we stuck at it. We got better as the game went along and by half-time we were in control of the midfield.

"It's only the second time we've played 4-4-2 against three at the back and the first time at Crystal Palace was a disaster because we were 3-0 down by half-time.

"So it was pleasing to see that we didn't have to alter the way we play to match them and that's because our front players have got brains and can defend.

"A big guy up front is an asset for us and we look much more dangerous."

Gradi was pleased to see Steve Jones register a spectacular first of the season as reward for efforts so far.

"I thought Jonah was extremely poor for the first half an hour but that's a sign of how much he's improving," continued Gradi.

"He's not frightened by that and kept getting better and better as the game went on.

"In the end he scored a super goal and I'm delighted for him because he worked hard for that."

The boss thought late departures for manager Denis Smith and Brian Carey were a little unnecessary.

"The ref booked two in the first ten minutes and then started to appeal for calm," he continued.

"I didn't think there was a problem and I think he created his own in the end."

Crewe will find out who they'll meet in Round Two on Saturday, not surprisingly Gradi has other things on his mind:

"I'm not concerned, the only thing I'm concerned about now is Ipswich on Saturday."

Joe Royle's promotion hopefuls should provide a stern test at the Alexandra Stadium.

The Tractor Boys will have a point to prove after Tommy Miller's last gasp penalty saved a 1-1 draw at home to Reading.

So do Crewe with a reversal of last season's home fortunes crucial.
