COULD you do somebody else's ironing for the day or volunteer to put on the marigolds and be their chief washer-upper in the name of a good cause?

If the answer is yes then Warrington Deaf Centre needs your help to raise cash for the centre's building fund.

Campaigners at the centre are organising an auction of promises and they desperately need people to volunteer their services.

Louise Dolan, of Deafness Support Network, said: "It will be good fun - we need as many people to make promises to auction as possible. We're looking for Brownie packs, individual people or businesses to show their support by offering to wash cars, do someone's shopping, anything!"

She added: "Deafness and hearing loss affects so many people. Most people will know someone affected by it so it's a good opportunity to show their support."

Alan Barlow, vice-chairman of Warrington Deaf Centre, said: "We are hoping to raise lots of money towards the building fund and hopefully we will get lots of support from the people in Warrington."

Organisers need a venue to stage the event and they are appealing to pubs and clubs in the town who have function rooms to help them.

Businesses can help by donating prizes.

Among the awards currently up for grabs at the auction are a signed Warrington Wolves shirt, two signed Widnes shirts and a Toledo's restaurant meal voucher.

Anybody who would like to volunteer for the auction or has any fundraising ideas is asked to call the Warrington Deaf Centre on 634640 or contact Guardian reporter Paul Keaveny on 434119.
