ONLY one and a half ounces separated the top three in Newton Anglers' Association's Ruston Paxman Trophy fished on the Upper pound of the Sankey Canal.

Kev Clarke claimed his close victory with a peg 33 catch of bream and roach on long pole that weighed 8lbs 7ozs 8drms.

In second place was veteran Liverpool match ace, Eddie Slater, with an all roach catch off peg 47 that pulled the scales down to 8-7-0.

Newton match ace Ivor Brown, fishing on peg 43, was third. He caught tench and skimmers on long pole that weighed 8-6-0.

The seventh round of the Summer League was won by Stan Roberts, of Ashton-in-Makerfield. Roberts weighed in with an eight-metre pole catch of roach and perch for 7-15-0.

Second was David Jolley, of Leigh, with eel, roach and perch to 6-15-0.

Liverpool's Eddie Slater was third after landing 6-11-0 of roach and perch on short pole.

Martin Sayer showed the way home in the Labour Club Junior Cup for under 12s on the upper pound on Saturday. Martin, fishing on peg 39, weighed in with 2-10-0.

In second place was Jonathon McClymont, who had 1-4-0 off peg 30.

Ryan Arnold, who fished on peg 33, was third with 0-11-6.

The Northern Fisheries Trophy for over 12s was won by Neil Douglas on peg 37 with 1-7-6, closely followed by Nathan Smith with 1-2-2, off peg 35.

Andrew Hay was in third position with 1-0-2, off peg 38.

The women's section has been in competition mode too.

Shirley Dilsworth won the Houghton Arms Trophy match. She fished on peg 28 and caught roach and skimmers for a haul of 1-15-2.

Second place went to former association champion Lynn Speakman, who was fishing on peg 24. Lynn had a similar catch for 1-1-2.

Third position went to Irene Deakin, on peg 25, with 0-10-10.
