THE funeral has taken place of George Gilbert Astles of Pickmere, who died on July 18 aged 72. The service was officiated by the Rev Johnson at Great Budworth Parish Church, followed by interment.
Born in Northwich, Gilbert, who was the husband of the late Eliza, was a local man who apart from National Service in the RAF spent all his life in the mid-Cheshire area. After National Service he worked for two companies, firstly ICI and then British Telecom for 32 years, retiring in 1990.
As a young man he was a keen sportsman including fishing, football and he was a life-long supporter of Witton Albion. He played cricket for Barnton for many years, his forte was being a fast bowler. Latterly his main hobbies were gardening and breeding canaries.
For the last ten years Gilbert had suffered serious illness but his sense of humour and dry wit had helped him through, always willing to help others if he was able. His family and friends will sadly miss him.
