LAST-minute entries are being encouraged for the annual Birchwood Fun Run - and the gruelling 10km road race which follows it!

Running club Spectrum Striders, which organises both events, will set up a desk at the Silver Birch pub, Dewhurst Road, so people can turn up on the day and register.

Would-be athletes for either event need to arrive and sign up at least an hour before their respective race, which both set off from outside the pub.

The fun run begins at 9.45am on Sunday and the road race, part of the 2003 Cheshire 10km championships, starts at 10.30am.

Striders spokesman Caroline Jones said: "We've already had lots of entries and we are expecting even more on the day."

Meanwhile motorists are being asked to be patient, if travelling in Birchwood on Sunday morning, as roads are briefly closed for the runs.

The route takes in parts of Birchwood, Oakwood, Gorse Covert and Croft, before heading back through Locking Stumps towards the finish.

More than 700 entries have been received for the longer race and hundreds are also expected for the fun run, in aid of the special care baby unit at Warrington Hospital.
