VANDALS in Great Sankey left behind a smelly mess when they attacked a dog waste bin - and angry residents say they had to wait 10 days for the council to clean it up.

The bin, which is located in a pathway between Sycamore Lane and Tankersley Grove, has been left as a shell that cannot be used by dog walkers any more.

Andy Goulden, of Sycamore Lane, said: "After a week it was still not cleared up, which isn't really acceptable on either public health or environmental grounds.

"I am amazed that the council doesn't consider cleaning up the mess a high priority."

He added: "People rightly criticise irresponsible dog owners who don't clean up after their animals.

"However, parents should be aware that some of their offspring are responsible for this and other vandalism of public facilities, as well as the general mess of litter and broken glass bottles in the area."

Dave Cotterill, design and technical support manager, said: "Dealing with dog mess and the cleanliness of our parks and streets is important to us as a council and we always try to do our very best to deal with any issues such as this as quickly as possible.

"We appreciate the comments we receive from members of the local community when acts of vandalism like this occur and this dog mess bin has now been replaced. However, due to circumstances, we do accept that this should have been carried out more quickly than it was and for that we apologise to local residents."
