Warrington duo come up trumps

TOP Warrington women's bowls pairing Karen Johnstone and Lesley Smith came up trumps in Rochdale at the weekend.

They defeated home duo L. Connelly and D. Dwyer in the final of the Top Gear Women's Pairs at Norden to make up for their defeat in the All-England Pairs final the weekend before.

But the success only came after a fright. Smith, of St. Oswalds Bowls Club and Johnstone, of Alford Hall, were 17-10 ahead at one stage and then fell 20-17 behind. They came back strongly to win 21-20.

Glory for Gatley

GRANGE A bowler John Gatley's season is going from strength to strength.

The 60-year-old, whose man of the match performance helped Grange A to win Warrington and North Cheshire Bowls Association's Silcock Cup a fortnight ago, has won his first individual competition for some time.

Gatley defeated Sale Excelsior's Ian Rhodes 21-18 in the final of the Rock House Open in Barton, Manchester, at the weekend. He won £400.

In the semi-finals he knocked out Sale's Darren Bellins.
