GOLBORNE Cricket Club enjoyed a fruitful weekend in the main.

They had to settle for a share of the spoils with Spring View on Saturday despite posting an impressive target of 203 runs for the loss of nine wickets but they were not to be denied victory against Atherton the following day.

Golborne batted superbly and they thoroughly deserved to defeat Atherton for the first time in their history at Sampsons Fields.

Professional Brad Roach and skipper Graham Marston were particularly impressive. They made 91 runs and 60 not out respectively as Golborne reached their target of 188 for the loss of only four wickets.

Opener Dale Tyrer scored 27 while Golborne's best bowler was Ian Ross, who finished with figures of five wickets for 54 runs.

Wicket keeper Darbyshire also excelled. He made one stumping and took two catches.

Golborne's best performers at Spring View were Ross, 49 runs, Ian Seddon, 32, Barry Greenwood, 23, Marston, 21 and Roach, 17.

Ross again sparkled with the ball, taking 4-62, and the final few overs were played in almost complete darkness.

Golborne Seconds endured a mixed weekend.

They thrashed Spring View on Saturday before suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of Atherton.

Quality bowling from Hodges, 5-63 and Ormshaw, 4-26, enabled Golborne to dismiss Spring View for 163.

They reached this target thanks largely to a record breaking third wicket partnership between Brunt, 60 not out and Waterworth, 69 not out.

Ormshaw also shone with the ball against Atherton. He took 5-38 as the home side amassed 220 from their 48 overs.

Golborne made a promising start in reply but a middle order batting collapse resulted in them falling 27 short of their target.

Former Golborne player David Kelly picked up five wickets while Brunt claimed his second half century in the space of two days.
