CONGLETON Town kicked off the new season in style on Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Atherton LR.

A superb pass from Kay in the first half led to the Bears' opening goal.

He fired a tremendous cross field pass to Scully down the inside left channel.

This opened up the visitors' defence, and Scully lured Andrews into a desperate tackle, which ended with Scully being felled in the penalty area.

Scully stepped up to score from the spot, only for the referee to call for a retake because of an encroachment by Naylor.

Scully kept his nerve, and put the ball the other side of the goal to give the Bears the lead.

Congleton should have doubled their lead just before the interval when a corner was not dealt with, and Bickerstaffe shot straight at the keeper from six yards.

The keeper took the ball off Worthington's toes eight minutes into the second half, and Congleton made the game safe with a second with 15 minutes left.

A free kick was cleared for a corner, which was played back to JP Jones, and Bickerstaffe met his driven cross with a firm header which went into the top corner of the net.

Congleton travel to Squires Gate tomorrow, and are at home to Mossley next Tuesday.
