A WIDNES student achieved one of the top five psychology A Level scores in the country.

Carmell College student Laura Knill was competing against 5,503 other candidates.

She gained four grade As and will study medicine at the University of Leeds.

Paul Grainger, the principal of Widnes & Runcorn Sixth Form College, has hailed the college's results a great success.

Nicola Bate scored four As and a D and is studying biomedical science as did Carina Bird who is studying geography, both at Liverpool University.

Ryan Fraser got five As and a C and is studying natural science, and Christopher Lamb got three As and two Bs and is studying Natural Science, at Cambridge University.

William Marley got three As and two Bs and is studying physics and astrophysics and Mandev Sokhi is studying physics, both at Manchester University.

Pass rates increased again and the vast majority of students securing their first choice university places. For the third year in succession the college's overall performance level increased.

Mr Grainger said: "We are especially delighted by the large numbers of our students getting four and five A levels.

"This was a good year for us, and we look forward to additional achievements in 2004 beyond."
