A GANG of four men have been arrested and released on police bail in connection with a serious assault on a man in Nantwich at the weekend.

The unnamed 35-year-old victim from Crewe was still being treated at Leighton Hospital as the Guardian went to press after sustaining a fractured cheekbone in the attack.

The incident occurred at 12.30am on Sunday in Wistaston Road when police officers, working as part of Operation Yellow Card to tackle violent and anti-social behaviour, came across a man with serious but not life threatening head injuries.

The man was rushed to the hospital by ambulance after officers urgently called for medical assistance.

Two of the men arrested are 17 and 20-year-old and have been bailed until October 10.

The other two men, aged 17 and 19, have been released on police bail until Tuesday August 26.

All four of the men arrested are from the Crewe area.

Investigating the incident, DS Kenneth Parkin of Crewe Police said: "We have arrested four people and released them on police bail pending further enquiries.

"The man is still in hospital with a fractured cheek bone although thankfully his injuries are not as bad as first thought."

Despite the serious nature of the incident, overall Operation Yellow Card was hailed a success by Crewe Police with 16 people arrested on Friday and Saturday night.

Chief Inspector Robin Crorie said: "The second night of the operation was extremely busy but I am disappointed to note yet again that alcohol played a significant part in the behaviour of those arrested."
