TIME stood still as Halton's deputy mayor inspected Runcorn air cadets.

Cllr Dennis Middlemass, 56, vividly remembers standing in their shoes.

He was an air cadet with a squadron in Dingle and loved every minute.

He said: "It was like a flashback, it brought me back 40 years! I used to really enjoy it."

Cllr Middlemass spent last Thursday evening with 306 (Runcorn) squadron, chatting to cadets and staff.

He watched them perform drill manoeuvres, study aircraft and practice firearms training.

He said: "I was very impressed. Every cadet was really well turned out. It gives you great pride in your appearance and builds up your confidence. I think it's a great organisation and only costs these youngsters £1 a week for two evenings."

The Runcorn squadron has been inundated with new recruits, following a recent feature in the World.

Squadron commander Flight Lieutenant Mal Jordan, said: "We had a great response. We are now parading 50 cadets. We are now looking for more adults to help us."

Female and male cadets, aged 13-18, meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7.30pm in Highlands Road.

Flying, gliding, shooting, adventure training, orienteering, canoeing, model making and community work are just some of their many activities.

Cadets also study for BTEC and Duke of Edinburgh awards. They compete in sports ranging from swimming and football to netball and athletics.

Visits to RAF stations, flying scholarships and overseas camps are also available.

"They've invited me to go on a weekend camp," said Cllr Middlemass.

"I'd love to join them. I've still got my boots!"
