ANGRY Runcorn residents are urging Halton Council to turn down police plans for custody a suite with up to 35 cells at Manor Park.

An action group called Save Our Sandymoor (SOS) is leading the campaign.

Local resident and group spokeswoman, Kym Riley, said: "We fear for what may happen when these people are released from custody to wander freely round Sandymoor and the surrounding areas.

"It is almost certain that local property prices will be affected by the development."

A statement from SOS said: "The new facility will house people arrested from Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington and will be located very near houses and a children's day nursery."

The group is now demanding a meeting with council bosses and police chiefs.

The new Sandymoor estate has been described as the 'jewel in the crown' of Halton.

Only a third of the planned development has so far gone ahead due to greenbelt restrictions.

The custody centre would also be near the new Badger homes development and close to Manor Park industrial estate.

Residents thought the centre would be at the Manor Park site itself, but notices have been put up opposite Manor Farm on Manor Farm Road.

A plan to build the centre in Birchwood was turned down twice by Warrington Council.

Cheshire police say adequate transport for people released from custody will be provided and they asked people to write to them if they have concerns.

They say the facility will free up officers for front line duties and will replace already existing services.

A council debate on the application is expected in October.
