ON the subject of town councillors' qualifications and desirable qualities that have appeared on the letters page in the Star, should not political party selection committees also set an informal age threshold for candidates?

Forty upwards is a reasonable age for anyone to become a town councillor (or MP) because thereby potential candidates have time to gain experience and, hopefully, acquire some wisdom.

If it is to be done properly the role of town councillor can be time consuming so do we really want young candidates who are either prepared to sacrifice the welfare of their families for the sake of a political career or who are unable to commit sufficient time and energy to the job?
