A WARRINGTON supermarket was gutted in a blaze on Sunday night.

Arsonists are believed to be responsible for the fire at Aldi in Crosfield Street.

Six fire engines were called to the scene as well as a hydraulic platform vehicle.

A Warrington firefighter, aged 25, was taken to hospital with a minor muscle injury to his leg, which he suffered while tackling the blaze.

A fire service spokesman said: "The bricks of the building are still there but it will have to be pulled down."

The fire is believed to have started inside a storage container at the side of the building before spreading through the store.

Police are urging anyone who was in Sankey Way or Crosfield Street before or at the time of the fire to come forward and call CID on 01244 613833 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.

Aldi was keeping tight-lipped about what will happen to staff who were working at the store or the total cost of the damage, telling the Guardian that it operates a 'no comment' policy.

An Aldi store in Haydock had to be rebuilt after a fire wrecked the building in 2001.
