HEARTBROKEN widow Pat Torres has put up a reward for the return of her late husband's diamond ring which she

believes slipped off in a taxi on Saturday evening.

Pat had worn the platinum and diamond jewel since the death of husband Frank two years ago and says its £6,500 worth means nothing compared to its priceless sentimental value.

The 64-year-old, who has lived in America for the past 40 years, lost the ring on Saturday night as she was on the way to a farewell dinner after five weeks visiting family in St Helens.

Now back home in Sante Fe, New Mexico, she is praying the ring will be found. On the eve of returning to America, Pat made an emotional plea and said she would offer a reward.

She said: "We were in a taxi on Saturday evening, around7.30pm, that was taking us to the Palace Restaurant on Duke Street.

"I remember having trouble with the seatbelts in the back and the ring must have slipped off my finger. I realised when we got in the restaurant and was frantic.

"The ring was part of a pair and I have worn it since my husband died. It means everything to me."

Contact has been made with the taxi firm but the ring has not been found. The police say it has not been dropped in at their station and St Helens second hand shops say the ring has not been brought to them.

Pat, who is originally from Clinkham Wood met Frank when he was based with the US Air Force at Burtonwood, added: "Someone who took the next fare could have picked it up. This appeal might hit somebody's conscience."
