A NEWTON school is attempting to enhance its bid for specialist science status by submitting plans to build a new science lab.
Newton Community High School has submitted proposals to St Helens Council to build a new science laboratory.
It is hoped the new lab will be taken into consideration when the decision on whether to grant it science college status is made.
Senior assistant director of education at St Helens Council Judith Godley said the new lab was 'part and parcel' of the whole project.
"They are putting in a bid this academic year and are well on the way to finalising it," said Mrs Godley.
If science status is granted the school will get extra funding per pupil, capital funds for refurbishment and it will be able to change its name to become a specialist science college.
Mrs Godley added: "The LEA is fully supportive of the bid and we are confident that the school will get the status."
The council has not yet granted planning permission for the extra lab.
