THE Newton AA Committee Match at Moat House Farm Fishery, Burtonwood was quite a change from the norm, with heavy rain, instead of bright sunshine.

But this did not put the fish off too much, on this prolific little fishery set in the heart of Burtonwood, off Gorsey Lane.

This newly made fishery holds a really good head of small carp, tench, barbel, chub, and other silver fish, and that makes for good sport any day, tickets are £5 and £3 concessions.

In first place was Paul Isherwood with a catch of Tench, barbel and small carp on pole fished maggot for 21 lbs-14ozs-8drms.

Second place went to seasoned match angler Ivor Brown, fishing short pole and pellets, again with a catch of small carp, chub and roach, for 19-2-0.

In third place was Dave Leyland with another catch of small carp, chub and roach, for 8-4-8, to pole and pellets.

Fourth position went to Mark Van Den Hoek with small carp, barbel and chub, for 7-14-8, on meat and short pole.

This was the last round before the final takes place next season. It was fished by 15 anglers on the upper pound of the Sankey canal.

Liverpool veteran match ace Eddie Slater came out on top after fishing the canal for the best part of 28 years. He caught roach, skimmers and perch for 7-9-4.

Second place went to Anthony Andrujzak with a similar catch for 7-4-0.

Third place was Stan Roberts, who caught bream and roach for 6-5-0.

Fourth place went to Mick Rogers with a catch of roach and skimmers for 5-14-0.

Fishery News: The Yew Tree reservoir at Haydock is fishing to maximum potential, with Leigh match man Ray Hopkins, catching approximately 350 roach averaging six ounces each.

Some of these fish were well over the pound mark, on pole fished maggot, on the drop, that is a haul of over 130 lbs of roach.

This is the potential of this prolific water. Days earlier he caught a 20lb leather carp on two pound line the fight lasted in excess of 45 minutes, the weight was witnessed on the day.

Tench, bream, crucian carp, are also showing to bigger baits such as corn and meat.

Eleven-year-old Martin Sayer can show the older hands at fishing a thing or two when it comes to catching quality fish, he netted a great brace of mirror carp 15-8-0 and 16-12-0, on floating crust, whilst fishing with his step dad.

The Vulcan reservoir is fishing well for small silver fish, with the odd tench and crucian carp showing along with good quality bream and perch, maggot, caster, punched bread, worm and meat are all taking fish.

The Sankey Canal upper and lower pound are producing good catches of bream, tench, carp, perch and silver fish, maggot and caster are scoring well.

Day tickets are available on the bank at £3 per adult and £1 per junior.
