WEAVERHAM Rangers Rugby League club is back in existence and looking for new players to swell the ranks.

The team has existed on and off since 1987 but coaches have always been from other areas.

This time people who have already proved their commitment to the team will be coaches.

Coach Roger Pickering said: "Five or six of us have been involved in the team from the start and we wanted to get it going again. We used to be pretty successful and hope to be again and to be honest, we missed the social side as much as anything.

"In the past we tended to have coaches from other areas who sometimes left when other clubs approached them. This time we decided to do it ourselves, which will give us much more ownership."

The Rangers will train at Weaverham High School and are also helping the school start their first Rugby League team.

Roger said: "We will be working with Weaverham High School to start up an under 12s team at the start of the season."

In the future he hopes the club will develop a few different teams for different age groups but for the moment they will be concentrating on 11-year-olds for the under 12s team.

He said: "We sent five people on a coaching course but it was only to qualify people to train people aged 11 and upwards. Hopefully in four or five years we'll have more age groups playing."

Anyone who would like to sponsor the club or play in the team is asked to call Roger on 01606 853 935.
