THOUGHTLESS hooligans left a trail of destruction in Davenham after a late-night drinking session.

Smashed bottles, cans and ring-pulls were found strewn across Butcher's Style on Friday morning - the day after GCSE results came out.

Villagers use the land for recreation and Davenham young footballers play there every weekend, but it has become a hangout for young people who often leave behind litter, say residents.

Mike Silcock, chairman of Davenham Parish Council, said he had no problem with young people using the field but leaving litter behind was dangerous and anti-social.

He said: "Everywhere you look is covered with smashed bottles and cans. I don't mind high spirits but they should clean up after themselves because other people use the land. It's becoming more than just anti-social."

Blaming GCSE celebrations, he said: "These kids might have got good GCSE results but they haven't got good house-keeping skills. It's not fair on everybody else because someone has to clean it up."

But not every young person using Butcher's Style causes a problem. Doug Hunt, coach of Davenham Young Footballers under sevens, saw a group of boys leave with their rubbish at 7.30pm on Thursday.

Doug has to clean up Butcher's Style every week before the young footballers can play.

He said: "It would be nice to just step onto the field and be able to play but there is a problem with bored youngsters leaving litter behind."
