FRUSTRATED Wincham residents are launching a campaign to slow down speeding drivers after years of polite requests have failed to slow down motorists.

A tunnel of brightly coloured signs will line the main road reminding drivers of speed and weight restrictions because residents say they are fed-up with drivers ignoring the rules and hurtling through the village.

Speeding and overweight vehicles have been a problem in the village of a number of years and Wincham Action Group (WAG) is trying to solve the problem. They have already written to MPs and the council but now say they want to bring the hidden problem to people's attention by making it visual.

A WAG spokesperson said: "The residents of Chapel Street and Ashwood Retirement Park are sick of HGVs coming through our village, even though there is a 7.5 tonne sign which prohibits this from New Warrington Road, plus cars speeding above the 40mph limit.

"In an effort to address this problem, residents are running a campaign from August 27 in an attempt to bring the issue to everyone's attention.

"A lollipop lane with a series of fluorescent signs is going to go up in people's gardens or front yards to let people know the weight and speed restrictions."

Roy Mainwaring, chairperson of Wincham Parish Council backs the plan and said: "Anything that slows down the speed merchants or gets HGVs to obey weight restriction must be a good idea and must be beneficial for Chapel Street in general. I wish the residents good luck with their signs and I hope it works."

Clr Carol Thomas said: "Speeding motorists are a problem all over Cheshire and there is a Government move to reduce speed limits nationwide. Here's a group in Northwich determined to do something about it and drag it to people's attention."
