Runcorn Cricket Club team of 1895 was fondly remembered as today's enthusiasts celebrated the 50th anniversary of their home in Moughland Lane.

However, the team's history dates back more than 100 years.

A 10 day cricket festival was held to mark the occasion.

Steve Gill, chairman, paid tribute to president James Posnett and his family.

He said: "Without their unfailing support, the pursuit of our national summer sport would have withered in the town."

And in spite of a lack of schools cricket, he said, the club is flourishing. "Our youngsters are getting fantastic support from the club, its coaches and their parents," said Steve.

"You only have to look at the number of former juniors who are vital members of the first XI or still supporting the club."

A brochure to celebrate the golden anniversary includes a brief history of the club, with a summary of the highlights of each decade.

Results of the 50th anniversary match played on Sunday, August 17 were Winsford 155 all out, Runcorn 161-2 (M Cahill 111 No, J Weston 32 No) including an unbroken stand of 137 for third wicket by Cahill and Weston. Junior coaching is held every Wednesday.
