THE north west plays host to one of the UK's premier aviation events next week - the 12th Southport Air Show.

More than 200,000 people are expected to converge on the town's seafront on September 6 and 7 for a fun and excitement-packed day.

One of the highlights of this year's event will be a simulated battle on the beach with special effects from the team responsible for the Oscar-win

ning film Saving Private Ryan.

The ever-popular Red Arrows also return as will the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight featuring Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster aircraft.

Admision costs are £17 per car with 'pedestrian' spectators charged £3.
