CONGLETON 1st X1 face a huge match tomorrow in their battle to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Congleton are only 13 points ahead of second from bottom Grappenhall after being well beaten at home on Saturday.

They went down by six wickets to third from bottom Warrington, who are just 10 points behind Congleton.

Each side has three games to go, with Congleton due to travel to third-placed Toft tomorrow.

Next Saturday they are at home to mid-table Cheadle Hulme, and their last game is at home to second-placed Widnes.

Club spokesman Mike Kitton described tomorrow's match against Toft as "make or break time" for the team.

"It is a vital game for us, and we need 40 points from our last three games to make us secure," he said.

"Our batting performance on Saturday was extremely disappointing, and the players were very downcast after the match.

"With the team we have we should not be in the position we are, and we have to knuckle down to avoid relegation."

Congleton's fight against the drop is made more difficult by Grappenhall's revival, Saturday's victory their third in a row.

Congleton have gone seven games without a win, and during that time have picked up just 40 points.

They declared on 86 for nine on Saturday after 40 overs to prevent Warrington gaining 25 points should they have won.

They scored 31 before a dreadful run of dismissals reduced them to 48 for eight.

Colin Mountford and Stuart Adlam restored some pride by adding 38 for the ninth wicket, Adlam hitting 10 and Mountford not out on 23.

Warrington bowled well, in particular Neil Thompson, who ended with six wickets for 46, and Lewis Nunn took three for 36.

Warrington replied with 88 for four in 30 overs, their wickets falling at eight, 19, 59 and 64.

Adlam bowled well, taking three for 26 in 13 overs, and Asif Saeed took one for 16.

Adrian Dale took two good catches in the gully.

"Rob Porter got his head down for his 13 off 61 balls, and if the other players had batted like him we would have done a lot better," said Mr Kitton.
