CONGLETON motorists face a week of delays and hold-ups to allow a main road into town to be resurfaced.

Work is to begin next Sunday, September 7, on the A34 Manchester Road at Lower Heath, and is due to finish the following Sunday.

The work is the latest headache for local motorists, following the creation of the new roundabout at the Waggon and Horses junction.

In addition work has still to be completed on rebuilding a retaining wall in Rood Hill.

The A34 work involves mainly resurfacing and some road rebuilding, and will affect the section of the road from the Grove Inn to Burns Garage showroom on Manchester Road.

During weekdays work will be undertaken from the Grove to the ambulance station, and from the traffic island to Burns Garage.

Lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be used.

During work near Walfield Avenue the avenue will be closed on safety grounds, with traffic being diverted along Giantswood Lane to the A34.

On the two Sundays, September 7 and 14, work will be centred around the traffic island near the ambulance station.

Temporary traffic lights will be used at all times, and most vehicles will be directed to travel over the traffic island.

"Although some delays will be inevitable the county council's engineering division has phased the week-long project to minimise traffic disruption," said Cllr Bill Wolstencroft.
