THERE'S good news for hundreds of pupils across Newton and Haydock who suffer from dyslexia.

St Helens Council has announced the development of an important new initiative, which will help dyslexia sufferers in the classroom.

Around 2,800 pupils across the borough suffer from dyslexia - a form of word blindness, which makes it difficult for them to interpret or decode the written word.

As part of the council's overall drive to address the condition, the St Helens Policy for Dyslexia is being launched at the Town Hall on September 26. Head teachers, teachers, advisers and educational psychologists have developed it over the past year.

As part of the initiative there are plans to introduce a dyslexia-friendly school kite mark for schools that meet the standards for effectively including youngsters with dyslexia. Copies of the policy will be available in schools and local libraries.
