POLICE in Newton have unveiled their latest secret weapon in the fight against crime - picture postcards of bobbies on the beat.

But forget the saucy seaside variety, these cards are putting a fresh stamp of authority on modern policing and are part of a new scheme to improve relations within the community.

The idea of the new postcards, which originated at a police forum meeting, was suggested by Fred Mort, a member of the public, and it wasn't long before officers sat down and gave the sterling suggestion some serious thought.

The new cards will form part of the Neighbourhood Policing approach, which has already proved a great success in the community.

Neighbourhood officers regularly meet with other agencies such as the health authority, social services, education and housing authorities, working together to solve problems and improve the quality of life for residents.

The purpose behind the cards, which will be distributed across both towns, is to bring the people of Newton and Earlestown closer to their policing teams.

They will feature details of who is responsible for their area and how to contact their officer in non-emergency situations, and are set to hit the streets net month.
