MIDDLEWICH Town gained a hard-fought win on Saturday against last season's Division Two champions Golborne Sports.

Despite the 2-0 scoreline Town did not have things all their own way in a match which contained chances for both sides.

But Middlewich did get the upper hand as early as the 10th minute when Rob Hopley ran through the heart of the Golborne defence before sliding the ball to Stanton who scored from close range.

The goal seemed to bring Golborne to life and they nearly equalised after 22 minutes with a header from close range which flew just over the bar.

The game was dominated by end to end play with both sides looking to play attacking football and it was Middlewich who were able to add to their score.

A mistake in the Golborne defence allowed David Dale to sneak in and drill home his second goal of the season and wrap up the points.

Middlewich played Rylands last night, Tuesday, and face Linotype on August 30 in the Cheshire Cup.
