WINSFORD United are now well on the road to recovery after a shaky start to the season - according to Blues boss Dave Twite.

Twite saw his young squad fall at the first hurdle when they were beaten 4-0 by Oldham Town on the opening day of the season.

But since then Winsford have won both matches, scoring five goals in the process, while only conceding two and Twite feels that his team has already begun to adapt to life in the North West Counties Second Division.

He said: "Our away form has been fantastic and we've put in two good performances.

"The lads have got lots of confidence now and seem much more relaxed.

"I think going into the Oldham game they were feeling quite a bit of pressure to perform but now that seems to be out of their system.

"The win at Eccleshall helped to ease that pressure and then the performance at Main Road was great.

"I was really pleased with the result from that game."

Despite the loss on the first day of the season Winsford now sit just one point from the top of the table and with games at home against Norton United and Formby Twite's men will certainly be looking to climb to the summit in the near future.

Twite added: "Things are going well now but we need to make sure things are right at home too.

"While the recent results have helped to steady the nerves the team still needs the support of the crowds at Winsford and I'm appealing to the fans to get behind the team."

Winsford have also been boosted by the news that former Leigh RMI defender David Derefaka has signed for the club.

Derefaka is a solid right back who began his career as a YTS trainee with Bolton Wanderers before moving on to Chester City and then, at various stages of his career, to Leigh, Hull City and Warrington Town.

Twite added: "It's great news for the club as David has fantastic experience, having played in the Conference and with Hull plus he gives us a true right back which we have been missing for a while.

"It's great for Winsford that all these players are prepared to play for the club for nothing as at present we don't even pay expenses."

Winsford's first win of the season came on Wednesday at Eccleshall.

Coming off the back of a 4-0 defeat Winsford really needed a win and thanks to a penalty from Chris Melia after 62 minutes and a header from Stuart Wellstead near full time the Blues came home with all three points.

Any remaining uncertainty was blown away on Friday night with a stunning 3-0 win over Maine Road.

The victory showed the Blues to be real title contenders and acted as testament to Dave Twite's squad building prowess.

Dave Heywood, who has been a revelation in the early part of the season, was outstanding throughout although it was returning hero Les Miranda who caught the eye.

Miranda, who has always been prolific in front of goal, scored two great goals after coming on as a 63rd minute substitute and with Jamie Williams adding a third Winsford's renaissance was complete.
