NEWTON look doomed to relegation in the Liverpool and District Cricket Competition after under performing in their make or break Bank Holiday weekend.

They are anchored to the bottom of the table with only three games left to play. The first of those games could not be much tougher as they travel to high flying Huyton on Saturday.

Newton have only themselves to blame for their disastrous predicament. They have struggled for consistency all season and were woeful in this week's double header.

They lost at Northop Hall by 26 runs on Saturday. Jamaican professional Gareth Breese was the only player to emerge from the game with any real credit, taking seven wickets for 35 runs with the ball.

Newton were even more disappointing against Leigh two days later.

They were bowled out for a lowly 78 with Ian Walkden, Tony Boardman and Aaron Scott the only players to make double figures.

Leigh topped this total without losing a wicket and it will now take a minor miracle to save Newton from the drop.

Newton Seconds on the other hand are clawing themselves away from the danger zone.

They drew with Leigh Seconds on Saturday before recording a 106-run victory over Sefton Park's second string two days later.

Rob Halliwell, 49 Dave Brookes, 44, Aaron Scott, 43 and Jones, 5-30, shone against Leigh while Finney, 44, Pemberton, 30 and Jones, who made 27 with the bat and took 5-22 with the ball, were Newton's star performers against Sefton.

Newton Thirds drew with league leaders Formby. They were inspired by 16-year-old Chris Ruck, who made a career best 74.
