NATIONAL team member Mark McClymont was in sensational form in Newton Anglers' Association's F. Gardner Senior Trophy.

He won the competition, which was held on the upper pound stretch of the Sankey St. Helens Canal, with a net of bream, roach, perch, gudgeon and skimmers weighing 11lbs 0ozs 8drms.

McClymont used long pole tactics on peg 33 in the 24-strong strong event.

New member Mark Maidley, David Hey and former Newton women's champion Lynn Speakman also won association competitions this week.

On the pleasure angling scene, the Yew Tree Reservoir has been fishing well for all species. Sport for carp and silver fish has been particularly good.

Arthur Slater has reported catching a brace of double figure mirror carp while his nephew Dave Slater took four carp, eight tench, five nice bream, three cruciens and a stack of roach.

Both anglers used sweet corn along the bottom. Maggot, caster, corn, worm and meat have also been accounting for quality fish.

Sport has also been good on the canal's upper pound stretch.

A large number of silver fish have been showing to maggot and caster while bigger baits have been accounting for plenty of tench, bream and carp. Pegs in the 30s and 70s have been the hot spots.

The lower pound stretch has been having problems with weed but the open pegs have been producing good catches. Tench, bream, roach, rudd, perch and large eels have all made an appearance this week.

Day tickets are available on both of these sections. They are priced £3 for adults and £1 for juniors.

Roach catches on the members' only section at Penkford Bridge have been going through the roof.

The average stamp has been in excess of 7ozs while some anglers have been taking more than 80 fish per session.

The Vulcan Reservoir has been fishing well for small silver fish while roach, skimmers, cruciens, tench, perch and double figure carp have also been appearing in anglers' nets. Maggot, punched bread, worm, caster, meat and corn have been the best baits.

Meanwhile, the association is looking for members to take up bailiff duties on their fisheries. Anyone interested should get in touch with the association's secretary or Steve McNally.

Anyone who wants to join the association should go along to the Houghton Arms Pub in Earlestown at 8pm on Mondays. New senior members need to bring along two passport photographs for their identification passes.
