A CREWE man has been charged with the robbery and attempted robbery of a woman and her elderly mother in Crewe Cemetery on Saturday.

Sven Krause, aged 23, from Frankbott Avenue, Crewe, appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates Court yesterday, Wednesday, after police arrested him following a street identification as police drove her around nearby streets.

He was remanded in custody until appearing at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday, September 2.

Police are now appealing for a woman who was walking through the cemetery with a pushchair and another child alongside her to come forward for evidence purposes.

The woman's partner is also being traced after he chased the man and informed the police of the direction he fled in.

The incident happened at the Broad Street cemetery between 2.20pm and 2.30pm as a 59-year-old woman and her 86-year-old mother tended to the grave of their father and husband respectively.

It is alleged that the man made a grab for the younger woman's bag before switching his attention to her mother's bag that was on the ground.

He was charged with the attempted robbery of the younger woman's bag and the actual robbery of the elderly woman's bag.

DS Ken Parkin said: "Violence was used on the younger of the two women and she has minor injuries after holding on to her bag.

"The man who gave chase did a good job but we are now appealing for him and his family who witnessed the incident to come forward."

The family is asked to contact DS Ken Parkin or Mike Price at Crewe CID on 01244 613331.
