AFTER years of not being able to take part in her favourite pastime due to health problems Warrington's Sunny Lowry is taking the plunge again.

The English Channel swimmer has joined Warrington Borough Council's adult placement scheme to aid her return to the water.

Sunny, aged 92, has been unable to go swimming for the past few years.

But with the help of the scheme she will now be attending Fordton Leisure Centre once a week with her carer.

Sunny told the Guardian: "It's marvellous! I can't do the things I used to be able to but it's nice to be back in the water."

It was 70 years ago this month that Sunny swam the English Channel.

Last month she was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Association's Hall of Fame.

The adult placement scheme offers respite care, short stays in carers' homes, day care on a regular basis and companionship.

Carers have been taken through an approval process and are paid an allowance and travelling expenses.

Anyone interested in becoming a carer should call Caroline Guerin on 444187.
