TWO Warrington A-level students received some of the best grades in the country.

Helen Connor and Thomas Whiteway were awarded two of the top five marks nationally for maths out of more than 5,000 candidates who sat the exam this summer.

Helen aged 18, of Highfield Avenue, Great Sankey, achieved five grade As in French, maths, physics, biology and general studies and is going on to study maths at Warwick University.

She said: "It was really great to get these results and I'm looking forward to going to university."

Thomas, also aged 18, of Bishopdale Close, Whittle Hall, received three As in maths, further maths and physics, a B in computing, and distinctions in two special extension papers for maths and physics that are only taken by top-performing students.

He will now study maths and computing at York University.

Helen and Thomas both studied for their A-levels at Carmel College, St Helens.

Rob Peacock, principal, said: "These results come from a great deal of hard work and effort. They are a tribute to the students and their families."
