WARRINGTON Athletics Club have honoured one of their most loyal servants.

George Edwards retired as president last year but try keeping him away from the place!

He presented the medals and trophies to winners at the recent Terry Davies Memorial meeting staged at Victoria Park and he received an award in appreciation of his services to the club since his first involvement in 1928.

That was when he represented Warrington in the 100m sprint of the first All-England Schools Championships, which were held at Chelsea Football Club's Stamford Bridge ground.

Former tax office civil servant George, who is 87-years-old and lives in Orford, has held the roles of secretary, chairman and president of the club in his 75 years of involvement.

He said: "I've enjoyed every minute of it! I have retired officially but it's not that easy when it has been such a big part of your life for so long. I still go along to events."

George's long-term involvement in athletics are thanks to one of his friends, who invited him down to the club at a time when he was playing semi-professional soccer up front for Runcorn, pre and post the Second World War.

Even in his army years he represented the South Lancashire 1st Battalion at athletics and did not stop running competitively until he was 70-years-old.

One of his career highlights was representing England in the 100m sprint and long jump at Chelsea in 1948.

George also spent 40 years as a track official and timekeeper for Lancashire, and then Cheshire, and was chief judge at many meets.
