A WARRINGTON company has launched the UK's first virtual classroom for audiologists.

Phonak UK, a manufacturer of hearing systems based at Lakeside Drive, has created Phonak Mentor - an online training facility for health care professionals.

A Phonak tutor runs a virtual class at specified times while students dial up via an internet connection and participate in the course using a headphone set.

David Charmer, managing director of Phonak UK, said: "Phonak Mentor is a blended learning concept that has been specifically designed for audiologists.

"It is a fantastic resource and it's great that the UK is developing and trailing the system which will eventually be rolled out globally."

Mentor has been trialed at Birch Hill Hospital in Rochdale. Michelle Bennion, head of department, said: "It's a great concept, it's easy to use and very flexible. You can train in the work place or at home."

It offers a variety of training options including various courses and also uses a range of teaching methods like the web forum, interactive academy and traditional face-to-face meetings.

The online academy will help audiologists complete the mandatory continuous education and training necessary for membership of many of the professional bodies.

It also allows access to Phonak's Knowledge Catalogue - an extensive source of clinical papers, books and field studies.

The interactive academy delivers the competencies required for hearing aid fittings.

The trial will last two months with the global rollout planned for next year.
