Mrs Ena Fairhurst, wife of the late Mr William Higham Fairhurst, died of cancer on July 13. She was 80.

Mrs Fairhurst, of Woburn Avenue, Newton-le-Willows, was born in Standish, near Wigan, and had lived in the Newton area for 53 years.

She and her husband owned a sweet shop in Queen Street, Newton, where she worked for 18 years.

Mrs Fairhurst was a regular worshipper at the Methodist Church in Newton, and had been a member of St Wilfred's Church, Standish, prior to her move in 1950. She also enjoyed attending St Peter's Church, Newton-le-Willows.

She leaves a son and two granddaughters.

A service was held on July 21 at Newton Methodist Church, followed by cremation at Wigan. The Rev Payne officiated.
