A SPECIAL farewell party on Monday recognised the sterling achievements of a woman who has dedicated 22 years of her life to helping the elderly.
Mary Williams has managed the popular Willow Wood Friendship Club since 1981, which provides a sanctuary for more than 30 members every Monday afternoon.
Part of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service in Cheshire, the friendship club - which meets at Willow Wood Community Centre - is the only form of social contact for many older people who cannot entertain in their own homes
The club is regarded as a place to meet old friends and make new ones, with members enjoying regular outings to the coast, games of bingo and staging regular fundraisers for a variety of good causes.
Pauline Blyth, from the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, said: "I'm delighted that we are able to pay tribute to Mary who has contributed 22 fantastic years to the Willow Wood Friendship club.
"Under her steerage she has ensured the smooth and efficient running of the club.
"This is quite an emotional day as there are a lot of members who will be very sad to see Mary leave her role as leader, but we wholeheartedly wish her the best in her second retirement."
As a thank-you, the Mayor of Winsford, Nick Harris presented Mary with a certificate and a specially commissioned paperweight in recognition of her service at the party.
As from September 1 Pearl Digney will take over as leader of the Willow Wood Friendship Club and anybody interested in becoming a member should telephone 01606 558131.
