Heworth 12 Widnes St Maries 26
ST MARIES made it two straight wins with an impressive win at last season's third placed Heworth.
Heworth opened the scoring with a penalty goal from Graig Potter which was quickly cancelled out by St Maries centre Dave Doyle, but midway through the first half a penalty conceded on the Maries 30 yard line allowed Heworth second rower Sean Brough to crash over.
With six minutes of the half remaining a superb darting run by the stand off gave the opportunity for Danny Yates to break the Heworth line and go over under the sticks.
Dave Doyle converted to finish the half 6-8.
Anthony Hollins grabbed the opening try of the secondhalf after which was once again converted by Doyle.
From the kick-off St Maries retained possession and drove to halfway and with scrum half Mark Birmingham once again showing excellent handling skills he fed centre David Doyle who raced 50 yard breaking three attempted Heworth tackles to go over under the sticks to give himself an easy conversion.
The Maries didn't have all their own way though and following a strong run from Heworth centre and man of the match Kenny Emberton he fed Wayne Foster who forced his way over for Potter to convert making the score 12-20.
This proved to be Heworth's last score of the match with St Maries keeping them pinned in their own half for the remainder of the game and with five minutes to go a 50 metre break by Anthony Hollins forced Heworth to concede a penalty, which was converted by Doyle.
With the game almost over Heworth conceded a penalty on their 20 and from the scrum the St Maries backs showed good hands to feed veteran prop Tony Hannon who forced his way over out wide.
The conversion attempt was missed but with four tries and five goals St Maries were well worth their win to leave them joint top of the division with Castleford Panthers and Rochdale Mayfield. Next upHuddersfield Sharks on September 6, kick-off 2.30pm.
