FIVE years ago I wrote to the chief constable asking if he would consider giving our two traffic wardens a form of transport (scooter or moped) so that they could get to places where traffic offences were being committed.
I received a reply of 'unworkable'.
Two years later traffic wardens in Manchester were riding around on scooters.
I have yet to see a warden write out a ticket when the traffic parking in the Runcorn Old Town by the banks is dangerous and stupid.
It is not an offence to stop for a moment on yellow lines but it is an offence to park and stand in a queue for 10 minutes.
However, wardens are often seen waiting and glaring at them until they go.
As for van and taxi drivers, that is their cue to go for a walk along Mersey Road for 10 minutes.
If wardens were more mobile they could ride up to Halton Road and fill their books outside the Co-op or better still save some lives outside St Clements School in Oxford Road. If there was a fire in Vista Road (my granddaughter lives there) the road is completely blocked every day at 2.45pm onwards.
They even park on the zigzags when they're not even supposed to stop on them.
Then there is the old favourite place for parking offences - St Chad's, Grangemoor where the kids come out of school learning every subject except how to cross the road safely. Of course there are a lot of parking offences that go unnoticed after 4pm when wardens go home and the police are far too busy to bother about stupid parking.
