Three wins in a row for Linnets
Worksop Town 0 Runcorn FC Halton 1
RUNCORN FC Halton went up to fourth in the table after their third away win of the season, writes Debbie Quaile.
A first half goal from Steve Daly and an inspired goalkeeping performance from Tony McMillan helped secured the points for Linnets against title hopefuls Worksop Town.
"I was very pleased with the way that the team played," said a delighted manager Liam Watson.
"Especially as we built on the good aspects of our performance against Lancaster but is important that we keep working hard and we prepare well for our next match against Radcliffe Borough on Tuesday."
Worksop began the game the livelier side and keeper McMillan had to be alert.
Runcorn FC Halton should have taken the lead when Kevin Leadbetter hit a superb shot from just inside the penalty area, which hit the upright and rebounded to safety with Worksop keeper Ian Bowlin well beaten.
Keeper McMillan then produced another excellent save from the dangerous Matty Caudwell before Leadbetter had another opportunity for the Linnets.
The away side finally broke the deadlock after 36 minutes with a goal from Daly.
Leadbetter found Daly in space in the penalty area and the young striker made no mistake from 10 yards out.
With the Runcorn FC Halton defence in tremendous form, Worksop were finding it difficult to break through but were awarded a penalty 15 minutes before the end when David Ness was adjudged to have fouled Caudwell in the area.
Roberts stepped up to take the penalty but keeper McMillan made a fine save, diving to his left.
With the Linnets defensive line remaining strong, it was Runcorn FC Halton who deservedly took the three points, which guaranteed them fourth place in the table.
The next match is on Tuesday, September 2, Runcorn FC Halton v Radcliffe Borough, kick-off 7.45pm and Saturday, September 6, Runcorn FC Halton v Spennymoor United, kick-off 3pm.
