A COMMUNITY came out in force to show its support for a grand church garden party.

Young and old visited St Mary's Church in Weaverham for its annual fundraising garden party.

There was something for everyone, including stalls, games, donkey rides, a bouncy castle and tea in the church house.

The church was also opened up for a tour of the tower and a display of bell ringing and there was also a pet competition and a hat parade.

Around £1,000 was raised through the event, which will go towards the church funds and its work with the Fair Trade organisation.

Gillian Edwards, who helped organise the event, said: "Thank you to everyone who attended and helped at St Mary's Garden Party - the event was a great success.

"The objective of the day was to make the community aware that the church is important within the village, and to show that we are accessible to all.

"The comments received were very positive and it was lovely to see that as well as having a fun afternoon, we had achieved our aim.

"Although the event was not a money making event, we did raise £1,000 which will be used to support the work of the church here and throughout the world."

Reverend Michael Ridley said: "It was fantastic. People have got a great affection for St Mary's and always come out to support it - and that was reflected on the day."

Among the prizes handed out on the day was a shield for the sunflower competition that was dedicated in loving memory of the late Dorothy and John Groves, who were very active in the church and always helped at the garden party.
