A vicar has converted his dining room into a bedroom for his wife who was seriously injured in a car crash.

Ken Burghall said doctors, though, were still trying to establish the extent of wife Maureen's injuries.

"When she first came home she was in a wheelchair but she is now on crutches and uses a walking frame," he said on Monday.

Mr Burghall, who runs St Oswald's, one of the busiest churches in Britain, said his wife broke both ankles in the accident in Chelford Road.

"It's not been easy for her and we've had to adapt accordingly to cater for her needs," he said.

"Fortunately the sink in the downstairs' toilet is big enough for her to have a wash in."

Mrs Burghall, 61, was taken to Macclesfield Hospital in February after being cut from her wrecked car by firemen.

She had been driving home to Lower Peover from a shopping trip in Macclesfield.

She spent five weeks in hospital and her legs were in plaster for three months.

"It has hit her hard but luckily she is a chirpy person and she's just trying to get through it," he said.

Mr Burghall, who plans to retire next year, said his wife might never walk properly again despite intensive physiotherapy.

"Her walking is seriously impaired," he said.
