MEMBERS of Warrington Speakers' Club certainly know how to put their money where their mouths are, after they managed to raise £339 for St Rocco's Hospice from a lunch and drinks party.

The event was held at the Stockton Heath home of hospice volunteer Doreen Monks and her husband Maurice.

Lesley Groome, from the hospice appeals department, said: "The money raised from this event will make a real difference to all the people we care for. Demand for our services has increased tremendously over the last 12 months. We have helped hundreds of cancer patients from the local area, providing treatment and support to both patients and their families.

"Our day unit had more than 3,500 visits last year from patients accessing a range of therapies and support services. The need for family support has also grown, especially bereavement work with the families and children who are left to grieve for their loved ones."

It costs £1.4 million per year to keep St Rocco's Hospice running and providing dedicated round-the-clock care for patients. Eighty per cent of all funds are raised locally through charity shops, lottery, generous donations and legacy gifts.
