I FEEL I must respond to the two letters in last week's Guardian regarding the town's railways and bus stations.

For Mrs J Graham to accuse me of merely calling for a lick of paint is quite outrageous and shows the total ignorance of the campaign I started to improve and modernise our railway stations.

I can furnish Mrs Graham with copies of letters to the Strategic Rail Authority, Government ministers and train operating companies which clearly show my call for action goes way beyond a 'mere lick of paint'.

Indeed, if Mrs Graham would take the trouble to read the excellent articles on this subject done by the Warrington Guardian, she would see how ridiculous her statement is.

I see the commitment given by the successful train company who will run the Trans-Pennine franchise to improve the facilities, as a positive step and I can assure Mrs Graham of two things.

Firstly, I will hold them to their commitments and secondly it will be a great deal more than a mere lick of pint.

Regarding the bus station, Steven Wainwright is right in his view that the bus station is in a bad state.

That's the reason why a new one is required and, for God's sake, do give credit to the borough council for getting the go-ahead to give Warrington a modern bus station that the town needs and deserves. I accept there is no excuse for litter or filthy windows and these issues need to be addressed, but that does not mean we have to have a poor railway as well.

Second, if he feels my remarks about the state of the town's railway stations is 'whinging', then I plead guilty, what's more, Mr Wainwright, I will carry on 'whinging' as you put it until our town has both railway and bus stations that are of the modern era and that we can be proud of.
