A KEEN cyclist from Woolston is set to take to the saddle to make a poignant pilgrimage from London to Paris in aid of the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Thomas Percival, aged 54, of Epping Drive, began the 280-mile ride from London to Paris yesterday, Wednesday, at Greenwich Park, in south east London, and on Sunday he is due to arrive at the Arc de Triomphe, where he will take part in a special wreath-laying ceremony.

Mr Percival, who is taking a break from his job as a manager for Safeway to complete the trip, said: "I cycle for pleasure and like to set myself goals to achieve.

"I've raised several thousands of pounds for various charities over the years and recognise this as the ultimate goal as well as being a very worthy cause.

"To train for the event, I've increased my usual 60 miles cycling per week up to 100 miles, but even so, the ride should be a tough challenge. I won't be cycling alone, as I'll be riding with a team of colleagues from Safeway."

During his four-day ride, Mr Percival will be fully supported by the Legion's experienced events team. He and the other riders will be accompanied by motorbike outriders for the entire length of the journey - the only charity bike ride to provide this level of support.

Since its introduction, the Legion's Pedal to Paris ride has raised more than £1.5 million for the British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

All the money raised by Mr Percival will go directly to the British Legion to help it provide valuable welfare support, counselling and convalescent care for ex servicemen and women and their families.
