BOROUGH council bosses have shown their commitment to the massive revamp of Golden Square by agreeing in principle to buy land needed for the development.

Meeting on Monday night, the council's executive board resolved in principle to secure the remaining land needed for the £100 million work by using compulsory purchase orders.

However, these won't be issued until a further resolution has been made by the board.

This will allow officers to publish details of the CPOs and notify anyone affected by them. Objections can then be sent to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's office, and if no agreement is reached a public inquiry will be staged.
